The Journey We Are On
Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls. (Jeremiah 6:16 ESV)
Jesus invites us on a journey. To grow in understanding the depth and profoundness of who He is. The mystery of Christ crucified. He calls us home to Him on the ancient paths of our faith, where our fathers and mothers walked beside Him. It is a call for the church to change our focus towards our Lord and be renewed. We want to grow in His character and likeness. We desire this Kingdom to come. Overflowing and running over our daily lives out into the world around us.
Before we criticize what is going on outside, we should focus on being transformed into Jesus’ reflection. We cannot hope to do what is right without our hearts changing first. This doesn’t come from diagrams, charts, and strategies. This comes with returning to our first love. It comes from this divine heart of mercy changing us from the inside out. It comes with remembering the ancient roads of intentionally cultivating intimacy and depth in our relationship to God. We have neglected the garden of our hearts for too long. We have drowned out the inner cry for His presence. Frankly, we are starving. However, we are coming home to our Father with expectant and overflowing hearts. This comes with remembering the good ways, the simple ways of cultivation: prayer, scripture, practicing righteousness, living in community. This is our return to our heritage, our places as sons and daughters. It is a call to practice the presence of God. It is remembering that our faith is intensely spiritual, and we are both body and spirit. We seek this humbly and meekly. None of us can do this without His help, it truly takes God to help us love God. But we do this with the knowledge that He loves us infinitely, passionately and His way of life is good for us. This is the journey we are on. Let’s go there together.
